Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Applicants may be working in any discipline, on a topic concerning women and/or gender. The recipient will devote half time to teaching and program development and half
time to research. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the
possibility of renewal for a second year. Salary is $40,000 plus benefits.

The next post-doctoral fellowship will begin in Fall, 2010. The position will be held by Sima Shakhsari (Stanford PhD, Anthropology, 2010; Dissertation Topic: “Blogging, Belonging, and Becoming: Cybergovernmentality and the Production of Gendered and Sexed Diasporic Subjects in Weblogistan”).

Faculty

$4000 Faculty Summer Fellowships (Summer 2010)

• In support of summer work on a research project having to do with women and/or gender.
• Must be UH faculty member. Preference may be given to those who have taught a course or courses cross-listed in Women's Studies or to those who are members of the Women’s Studies Faculty Affiliates.
• Submission Deadline: May 20, 2010, noon. No late submissions.
• Submit:
  • 1. A description (3 pages maximum) of summer project - Please include in your description a sense of the length of the project (article, book, part thereof, etc.) as well as of your anticipated date of completion. Please note if you would use this money to support travel to an archive or other research site, though travel is not required.
  • 2. c.v.,
  • 3. Two (2) letters of reference
  • 4. a list of any women's studies courses you have taught.

$500 Women's Studies Faculty Travel Grant

• For travel to a professional meeting/conference relevant to the recipient's research or teaching in women's studies. Payable as reimbursement of receipts for expenses or for purchase of a ticket before travel.
• Open to full time UH faculty, who have taught a course cross listed under Women's Studies.
• Submission Deadline: May 20, 2010, noon. No late submissions.
• Submit:
  1. memo stating the name, date and location of the meeting and the role you will be playing there (paper presenter, panel chair, etc.,
  2. outline of a simple budget,
  3. a description of how participation in this meeting will enhance your work in Women's Studies.

Students

The Shuart Scholarships: Blanche Espy Chenoweth Graduate Fellowship - $2500

• For a student doing work on a thesis or dissertation on a women's studies topic or a Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate student who has completed at least two Women’s Studies courses.
• Selection based on the merit of the student's project and the student's academic record.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0; Full-time student in Fall 2010/Spring 2011.
• Submission Deadline: May 20, 2010, noon. No late submissions.
• Submit:
  1. GRE scores and transcripts of all graduate coursework
  2. Summary of your project and its current status
  3. Three recommendations from people familiar with you and your work.

Elizabeth Smith Chenoweth Undergraduate Scholarship - $2500

• For a student or students (junior or senior) not necessarily women's studies minors, who have taken at least two women's studies courses.
• Minimum GPA of 3.0; Full-time or part-time student (award may be split between two part-time students).
• Both merit and financial need will be considered. • Nontraditional students are particularly encouraged to apply.
• Submission Deadline: May 20, 2010, noon. No late submissions.
• Submit:
  1. Transcript
  2. Biographical essay (200 words), including a description of your career plans
  3. Three recommendations from people familiar with you and your work
  4. Financial Aid Statement Form
  5. May also obtain form from Women's Studies Office, 624 Agnes Arnold Hall

Maud Smith Paddock Grad/Undergrad Scholarship - $2500

• Criteria for undergraduates: A declared women's studies minor (junior or senior) with a least two courses completed in the minor. Minimum GPA of 3.0; Full-time student taking 12 hours in the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011.
• Criteria for graduate applicants: the same as for the Blanche Espy Chenoweth Fellowship (see above).
• Both merit and financial need will be considered.
• Submission Deadline: May 20, 2010, noon. No late submissions.

2. Biographical essay (200 words), including a description of your career plans
3. Three recommendations from people familiar with you and your work
4. Financial Aid Statement Form (undergraduates only).

The Patricia A. Eichhorn Endowed Scholarship for Returning Students - $500 award

The scholarship is in support of non-traditional, returning students who are furthering their education. After raising five children, Patricia Eichhorn returned to school and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction. In recognition of her leadership in providing financial assistance to students in transition seeking a second chance to have a productive and rewarding career, her family established the scholarship through an endowed gift to the University of Houston.

• The scholarship is open to non-traditional students who are furthering their education.
• Applicants must be certified degree-seeking students at UH. Candidates may be entering or re-entering a program.
• Recipients must enroll for a minimum of six credit hours of undergraduate or graduate studies in Fall 2010 and a minimum of six credit hours in Spring 2011.
• Recipients must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better to receive the second payment.
• Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need.
• Submission Deadline: May 20, 2010, noon. No late submissions.
• Submit:
  1. Typed biographical essay of no more than 250 words that includes the applicant's educational goals and ways the scholarship would assist the applicant in attaining them.
  2. Official transcript.
  3. Two letters of recommendation from educational or professional sources.

Friends of Women’s Studies: $250 Student Essay Prizes

The Women's Studies Program is pleased to announce an award of $250, to be made in Spring 2010 to the best undergraduate or graduate essays on women's studies topics. The prize is funded by the Friends of Women's Studies. (You do not have to be a woman or in the Women's Studies Program to enter.)

• Entrants must be students at UH (male or female, graduate or undergraduate).
• Essays must be the student's own original work, written for a UH class in the 2009-2010 school year. Course name, semester and professor's name must be indicated on essay.
• Maximum length: 20 pages (undergraduate); 30 pages (graduate).
• Three typewritten/printed copies must be submitted to the Women's Studies office (624 AH), along with student's name, year, major/minor (if applicable), address, email and phone number.
• Submission Deadline: May 20, 2010, noon. No late submissions.
• Essays will be judged by a three-person committee appointed by the Director of Women's Studies. The committee will include two faculty members and a member of the Friends of Women's Studies Board. The Women's Studies Program retains the right to not make an award.

Deadlines

Applicants are invited for the Fall round of Graduate Student Travel Grants, for students presenting papers at conferences on women’s- and gender- studies topics. Deadline October 1, 2010.

All application material or essays should be turned into the Women’s Studies Office, 624 Agnes Arnold Hall.
